The Point Vicente light is one of the newest, built in 1926 on Los Angeles' Palos Verdes peninsula. It may look familiar, since it has been featured in dozens of movies and television

May 1, 1870, the first light at Point Arena was established. It is one of the three classic seacoast tower lighthouses in California. (The other two are Pigeon Point and Piedras Blancas.) It was built on the first prominent point north of Point Reyes. The lighthouse sits on the plateau that rises fifty feet above the water below. In November of 1855, ten ships sank in the waters around Point Arena. Construction began in 1869. It was built with bricks that were baked in kilns at Point Arena along with an addition 114,000 shiped from San Francisco.

The coast of California remained dark until the 1850's when the first lighthouse contracts were awarded. The Point Pinos light was first lit, February 1, 1855. It is the oldest continuously operated lighthouse on the west coast.

The Cape Meares Lighthouse was constructed in 1890, just south of Tillamook Bay. The stubby, octagonal tower is only 38 feet tall, but sits on the edge of a towering 200 ft. cliff above the ocean.

Cape Blanco is the southernmost of Oregon's lights. It is also the oldest original tower in Oregon. The light was proposed in 1864, and a first-order lens was ordered from Henri LaPaute, of Paris. The light was finally lit for the first time on December 20, 1870.
